Speech notes for WSC's speech (7 May, The Hague [The Netherlands]) at the Congress of Europe entitled "The grand design" including: the progress of European integration and support from the United States for the Marshall Plan; the origins of European unity and the “Grand Design” of King Henry IV of France; the importance of “forgetting the hatreds of the past”, of mutual economic and military aid, closer political unity and maintaining progress; the speech he made at Zurich [entitled "The tragedy of Europe" see CHUR 5/8]; welcome to the German delegation; reconstruction in Europe without rebuilding German military power; the Marshall Plan; the need to include states in the east and south-east of Europe; support from the United States for a United Europe; the need to aim for world unity including “the third gt [great] and equal power [the Soviet Union]” in spite of its “discordant attitude and policy”; the need to confront all forms of tyranny “Nazi and Communist” so that “we sh [shall] move together into a happier sunlit age…masters of all the science, the abundance and the glories of the future”.
